We were feeling a little trapped in town this past weekend so we decided to head out for a bit and see what's going on in the mountains just north of San Diego. Since it takes a while to get there, we decided to take the 6. It's just better for longer cruises than my Fiat 500 when you have more than two people.

(The Mazda in the pic is not mine, but it is identical to the one I got for my wife.)

We have the 6 with the four cyl engine, and despite the rather large size of the car, that 4 has plenty of power. Not once did the engine feel strained on the highway or even when we started gaining altitude, despite the full load of passengers. We were only going from sea level to about 4000 feet, but still, I've done the same trip in other cars with larger engines and the strain on those was quite noticeable, even at that modest height. The engine was silky smooth through all gear changes and road conditions.

What was the best part? The handling! Every curve was a joy. The switchbacks were rapturous and the family was comfortable the whole way. My wife only told me to dial it back when she saw the maniacal grin on my face when the roads became really twisty! With each curve, it was almost as if it were saying to me "Is that all? You can do better than that!" What a ride!

In short, despite the size, my wife's 2012 Mazda 6 has all of the the "Zoom-Zoom" one expects of a proper Mazda and I'm glad we were able to have the time for me to rediscover that fact.
